National History Day
Debate & Diplomacy in History
NHD Help Links can be found on the NHD Theme page.
Each year, National History Day® frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The 2021-2022 theme is Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.
Every year National History Day® frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The intentional selection of the theme for NHD is to provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.
Student NHD Calendars
The 2021-2022 theme is Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.
Until History Night, February 3rd, Students will be encouraged to work three to four hours a week at home on their National History Day project. Students need to select their National History Day topic by Friday, November 19th. They will then need to find a book, of at least 100 pages, on their topic by Thursday, December 2nd. A 250-word book summary, using appropriate MLA citation, will be due on Thursday, December 16th.
We will write a mini 3-5 paragraph research paper the first week after the holiday. Students may work ahead on that paper over the holiday if they have time. (Work at home during the holiday is not required.)
