July 15, 2024
Prosser School District Parents and Community Partners,
During my first year as the Prosser Superintendent, I closely observed our early release on Wednesdays. My findings were that we had many interruptions or lack of attendance during the professional development for our staff. Some of my noticing’s were very strong positive Professional Learning Communities (PLC) in some buildings and less collaboration in others. I also observed interruptions to the meeting time from students, parents, and even administrators who needed an educator for one reason or another. As a result of this the PSD bargaining team proposed a change from early release on Wednesdays to a late start on Wednesday.
Why is the Prosser School District changing from early release on Wednesdays to a late start on Wednesday?
1. After school professional development vs morning professional development.
a. There were many factors when deciding to change from early release to late start one of which is the interruptions that happen in the afternoon. These include appointments for staff, athletics, parent meetings, IEP meetings, etc.
2. Supervision of students from the time school ended to the start of club meetings and/or athletic practices or games.
a. While this was not as large of a concern at the high school level it was at the middle school level. Some Wednesdays found us needing supervision for over 100 students while they waited for their teachers to finish their training prior to a club or athletic practice or game. This was difficult to manage and was very expensive to have staff supervise the students.
3. Older sibling students can help at home prior to the start of school. Those same students may not be available after school because of activities and/or sports.
4. Providing a consistent schedule for professional development throughout and across the district to improve student learning.
Why did the parents and/or families not hear about this sooner?
The PSD has relationships with our multiple unions inside the Prosser School District and until we finish those contracts we cannot release information to the public. The PEA contract was ratified on July 10 and now we are letting everyone know now.
What time will school start on Wednesday?
Keene Riverview - Earliest Student Drop Off Time: 9:30 Class Begins at: 9:50
Heights Elementary - Earliest Student Drop Off Time: 9:20 Class Begins at: 9:40
Whitstran Elementary- Earliest Student Drop Off Time: 9:15 Class Begins at: 9:35
Housel Middle School- Earliest Student Drop Off Time: 9:10 Class Begins at: 9:30
Prosser High School- Earliest Student Drop Off Time: 9:00 Class Begins at: 9:20
Will breakfast be served on Wednesday?
No, breakfast will not be served, but grab and go breakfast meals will be available if needed.
What time will the bus pick up my child?
Transportation will be putting out a schedule but plan on your student being picked up 1 hour and 30 minutes later than on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please check Parent Square for additional information that is specific to your student.
Partnering with Boys and Girls Club
The Prosser School District and The Boys and Girls Club of Prosser are working together to explore options for morning supports for the families of Prosser students for late start Wednesdays. Stay tuned for more information.
I have also planned for an ice cream social on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 4 p.m. at Prosser High School Commons. At that time, I will be available to discuss this with you and will also be sharing the great news about all of our capital levy projects.
I hope to see you on Thursday, July 18.
Sincerely,
Kim Casey, Superintendent
